Sometimes the most useful applications of AI are surprisingly ordinary.

My YouTube Premium subscription recently expired. I had been paying around RM20.90 a month and was about to renew it.
Before doing so, I decided to ask ChatGPT a simple question: Does Google offer a subscription bundle that includes YouTube Premium and other Google services, such as Google One?
I wasn't expecting anything particularly interesting. Perhaps there was a bundle that offered better value.
Instead, ChatGPT introduced me to something I hadn't even heard of.
Discovering YouTube Premium Lite
Apparently, Google offers a cheaper subscription called YouTube Premium Lite, available in Malaysia for RM12.90 a month.
Compare that with the regular YouTube Premium subscription at RM20.90.
That's a saving of RM8 every month, or RM96 a year.
Not a huge amount of money, certainly. But why pay more for something if a cheaper alternative meets your needs?
What's the Difference?
Initially, I assumed Premium Lite would be a severely restricted version of YouTube Premium.
But the differences are less significant than I expected.
| Feature | YouTube Premium Lite | YouTube Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | RM12.90 | RM20.90 |
| Ad-free regular videos | Yes, most videos | Yes |
| Ad-free music videos | No | Yes |
| Ad-free YouTube Shorts | No | Yes |
| Background playback | Yes, most non-music videos | Yes |
| Offline downloads | Yes, most non-music videos | Yes |
| YouTube Music Premium | No | Yes |
| Apple TV support | Yes | Yes |
One important development is that Google expanded Premium Lite in February 2026 to include background playback and offline downloads for most non-music videos.
Previously, these were major reasons to pay for full YouTube Premium.
That makes Premium Lite a considerably more attractive option.
Why Premium Lite Works for Me
I mainly use YouTube to watch educational videos, technology reviews, podcasts, news and general-interest content.
I watch on several devices, including my Apple TV, MacBook and iPhone.
My main reason for subscribing to YouTube Premium has always been to avoid advertisements interrupting videos.
I don't particularly need YouTube Music Premium. I can also live with advertisements appearing on music videos and Shorts.
So why should I continue paying for the more expensive subscription?
For my viewing habits, Premium Lite offers almost everything I need.
ChatGPT Even Guided Me Through the Subscription
After discovering Premium Lite, I asked ChatGPT how to subscribe.
It provided a direct link:
https://www.youtube.com/premiumlite
I opened the page using Safari on my MacBook, signed into my Google account and subscribed.
The entire process took only a few minutes.
No complicated settings, no technical workarounds and no need to install additional software.
Just a cheaper subscription that I hadn't known existed.
The Real Value of AI Is Sometimes Quite Ordinary
We hear a great deal about artificial intelligence transforming medicine, writing software, analysing vast datasets and potentially changing entire industries.
These are certainly important applications.
But I think we sometimes overlook the smaller, everyday benefits.
In this case, I wasn't asking ChatGPT to solve a difficult scientific problem.
I simply wanted to know whether there was a better subscription option.
ChatGPT helped me discover an alternative, understand the differences, weigh the advantages and disadvantages, and complete the subscription.
The result was a better-informed decision and a modest financial saving.
RM8 a month. RM96 a year.
Nothing spectacular, but useful nonetheless.
A Lesson About Subscriptions
Many of us accumulate digital subscriptions over the years.
Streaming services, cloud storage, productivity software, AI tools and numerous other services quietly deduct money from our accounts every month.
We often continue paying without checking whether cheaper alternatives have become available.
Subscription providers regularly introduce new plans, change features and adjust prices. Unless we actively look, we may never discover these changes.
Perhaps this is another useful role for AI: helping consumers question what they are paying for and whether they are getting good value.
It won't always find a cheaper option, and its information still needs verification. But it can help us ask questions we might otherwise never consider.
In my case, a simple conversation with ChatGPT saved me RM96 a year.
Now I'm wondering how many other subscriptions I should review.
