Keeping organized
More than half the time, I rely on my PDA phone to keep track of contacts and appointments. My “workhorse” application used to be iambic’s Agendus on the Palm Centro. However as I have now officially “retired” the Centro, I have been using the Treo Pro which is Windows Mobile 6.1 powered as my daily organiser and phone. I did try Agendus for Windows Mobile but found it too slow. I currently use Agenda One which I find much faster yet retains the capability to link appointments with contacts. I do miss Agendus’ ability to list the History but I can work around this by searching Google Calendar since my Calendar and Contacts are synced to the Cloud using Google’s free services.
Speaking of syncing, this is my current setup:
Outlook <-- Gsyncit –> Google (Calendar, Contacts and Notes)
Treo Pro <-- Activesync --> Outlook
Palm Pre <-- Synergy --> Google (Calendar and Contacts)
I can say my data is quite safe being in two PDA Phones, in Outlook and also in the “cloud”.
For Tasks I actually nowadays rely on Remember The Milk which I manage in the mobile (Treo Pro WM app) as well as via a browser (desktop/mobile).
Most of my Memos have been migrated to Evernote which is available for both WM and the Palm Pre.
At the moment I am using the Palm Pre mainly for email and mobile browsing plus checking out the new WebOS applications as they are made available. The Pre’s Calendar is somewhat limited and I can’t yet use it for my daily work as there is no proper “Agenda View” (though there is a Homebrew for that) and in fact lacks alot of things like Categories and search capabilities. I hope that Palm improves on the PIM as Palm was traditionally strong in this area and it seems rather ironic I have to rely on a Windows mobile device to keep organised!
Here’s a snapshot of my 3 PDA phones:
So how do you keep organised?

Palm TX, still
The data plan charges for “smartphones” are too much for the rare times I access the web via cellphone.
WiFi is in the hospital, office, so I can use a netbook or Palm TX to access the web. Battery life is still too much of an issue in a “smartphone only” setup. iPhone medical apps are just starting to catch up with those of the Palm OS.
A smartphone is ineveitable, but not quite yet for me.
Battery life aside, you could opt to use a device like the Palm Pre with Wifi only. There is an option to turn off the Data usage within the phone settings.
Personally I have lost faith in the Palm Pre, I don’t think many doctors will adopt it. I still use my Treo 680 but I’m thinking more and more about getting an Iphone.
Oh no! Why? Having used it for a few weeks now, I think it has much more potential than an iPhone. There needs to be more medical apps for sure but Epocrates for WebOS will be out in beta by this month hopefully. I have most of what else I need running in Classic, and written some too (MediPDA, OncoPDA and DrugView).
The multitasking and push notifications are superb and miles better than what you see on the iPhone. I have 6900+ contacts and locating one in Universal search is faster than trying to locate contacts on the iPod Touch.
I still carry my Palm 650 - just for Epocrates and some other medical software while I work in the ED. Slowly transitioning over to the Pre but I won’t give up the 650 until I can access Epocrates without classic. Hope to get homebrew aps installed this week to do just that!
