The NHS “Connecting for Health” (CFH) project is currently deploying a network of computer systems throughout the NHS with the aim of providing healthcare professionals with a suite of desktop applications that facilitate improved medical care to the public, which is fine is everyone has easy access to a desk.
Individuals working in hospitals, in general practice and in the community, however, recognize that medical care is often delivered away from the deskbound systems and require lightweight mobile information systems that can be customized to their needs. Also, in the acute hospital setting, legislation has significantly changed work patterns. Healthcare teams now operate in shifts and more than ever need to pass critical up-to-date information accurately between shifts.
Dr Marc Epstein, a junior hospital doctor, designed MedicMate as a response to medics’ mobile needs.
“What we needed on our ward rounds was a mobile device with a customizable application that allowed us to maintain an accurate list of our patients including demographics, ward locations, a listing of the patients’ active medical problems, jobs done and needing to be done. We also needed a readily accessible resource of best practice guidelines and clinical protocols as well as a smart method for transferring this constantly evolving set of information from shift to shift. In short, we needed to move from dog-eared paper-based lists and handover to a mobile digital patient tracking solution. Now that I am a trainee GP I find MedicMate useful on home visits.”
