UE: It’s still good old PalmOS for me

I have since started to look at the “dark side” with a Dallab P900 (relatively unknown PocketPC2003 device) and then a Fujitsu Siemens T830. Yet, after starting as a doctor on the wards, I reaffirmed my liking for the PalmOS’s simplicity. I have been using the Fujitsu Siemens for almost a year, living through the forced hard resets (it just did it itself 2-3 times in the past year!), and the quirks and many soft-resets.
I forced myself to use only the Windows Mobile device in order for me to develop new habits, discover new software, etc… to make it work! Alas, after almost a year on the T830, many different software setups, and keeping my Palm in the shelf, I found that I still could not get my work done with the T830 alone. Things were just too slow! It took 5-10 seconds for my drug references to open, 5-10 seconds for a Skyscape software to load, etc., when it was instantaneous on the PalmOS devices! DayNotez which worked well on the Palm for jotting random notes loads in about 10 seconds on the T830!!! By the time it loads, the conversation would have switched topics!
Finally, I dusted off my trusty Tungsten C, updated some of the software, and voila — it works well and accompanies me everywhere in the hospital!
Welcome back from the dark side Tien Lee!
I have tried out WM PDAs and smartphones (like the Dopod series) and they are simply too cumbersome and sluggish for me. It’s all about managing information on the go and nothing beats PalmOS in this respect. It would be nice to have 3G and HSDPA data capability and for that I look forward to the next generation OS from Palm – the Nova. I sure hope Palm doesn’t fumble with the delivery this time. It might be their last chance to redeem themselvse amongst their loyal followers. Already we have Access powered phones coming perhaps in June. These will run legacy Palm programs so they’ll be an interesting alternative.
The other competition comes from Styletap which is an emulator allowing you to run PalmOS applications on other platforms. They are already available for WM but Styletap is also coming to the iPhone. Styletap on WM is more sluggish than native Palm apps on a Palm PDa or smartphone but the iPhone demo is pretty cool (hat tip to Tamspalm)

I concur! I have been using PalmOS since 1998.I hope to celebrate my 10 anniversary this May,2008:-)
Didn’t expect to see my post noticed
. I carry both the Tungsten C and the T830 everywhere at the moment. If there is a 3G PalmOS phone, I’ll probably be one of the first to try getting one! Better if it is 3G and GPS capable, like the T830.
Well at the moment I have Digi and it’s on Edge speed which is only slightly slower than 3G. However I do look forward to a HSDPA capable Smartphone which runs legacy Palm apps well. I guess we have to look forward to the Palm OS II devices coming out frmo Palm or else Access powered phone.
I don’t mind the absence of GPS as I much prefer a dedicated automtoive GPS ( I use a Garmin Nuvi)
The problem is I am with Three Network in Australia (under a 2-year contract) which requires a 3G-capable phone… or at least a USIM compatible 2.5G/EDGE phone. Not sure if GSM Centro can use a 3G USIM card? If Palm releases a 3G-capable phone, they will get at least 2 customers — one for me, and one for the missus.
I suspect I am not alone. There are probably other networks in the world that is 3G-only (and roams for free on other networks).
I used 2 Palm OS pda’s & last year went over to the dark side. I should have gotten a Tungsten but the Missus liked the Ipaq. Rather than being tech support for 2 OS I went with WinMobile.
After a year, i missed Palm Os. Just hope they release better hardware though. At the moment, don’t want to spend more on gadgets
.
Thinking of using an Eee Pc as a pda.
